5 Decades of Pride: The 1970s
2022
5 Decades of Pride
is a series of five public artworks created to mark UK Pride’s 50th anniversary year.

The artist invited LGBT+ networks and their allies to contribute what they felt were the most important issues facing the LGBT+ community in the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s, the 2000s and the 2010s.

Participating networks included Sky’s LGBT+@Sky, Channel 4’s 4Pride, the Peter Tatchell Foundation plus LGBT+ staff members and allies at Clear Channel UK, Alight Media, JCDecaux, and Mass Media.

History records that the 1970s were dominated by police harassment, primarily of gay men. ‘Pretty policemen’ entrapped gay men into committing offences; gay bars and their patrons were often subjected to unfair and disproportionate police scrutiny.

5 Decades of Pride
highlights what has mattered, and continues to matter, to LGBT+ people and their allies over 5 decades of protest and progress.
