A Flying Saucer

The 'Counter Culture Rising' series consists of twelve digital billboards used to convey a single cinematic narrative.

Collectively, the billboards tell a story of alien visitation, warnings about climate catastrophe and war, the threat posed by machine intelligence, the power of living peacefully and advanced states of consciousness.

The hippy counter culture was often associated with UFO phenomena: hippies living psychedelically tended to see all kinds of things in the sky.

The artwork 'A Flying Saucer' refers to the belief that alien visitation was imminent. This was a persistent trope of the 1950s and 60s. Aliens would visit earth with dire warnings about man's reckless atomic testing or degradation of the environment.

Alien wisdom would ultimately lead to a raising of human consciousness that would save the planet. Or the aliens would simply destroy humanity to protect the earth.

'A Flying Saucer' is part of socialart.work, a mass public art project by public artist
Martin Firrell
calling for greater social justice.

The project aims to create debate about power and gender, women's equality and masculinity, alternative forms of economic and social organisation, black power, and solidarity between people from different backgrounds and ethnicities.

It includes posters, publications and events supported in 2018-19 by the artist's residency with leading Out of Home media company
Clear Channel UK.
